I still remember the day my friend Neha showed me a beautiful string art piece she had made. It had the word “Home” crafted with colorful threads and nails on a wooden board. I thought it was just a hobby. Little did I know, this small passion project would one day turn into a business that made her ₹1 lakh — all from home, using just basic materials and her creativity.
Neha had always been into crafts, but never considered selling her work. One day, I casually suggested, “Why don’t you try putting it online?” She laughed it off at first. But then she created an Instagram page with a few of her best pieces and posted them. No fancy camera. No ads. Just simple photos and honest captions.
At first, there were a few likes, a couple of DMs. Her first order was from someone in our own neighborhood. They wanted a nameplate string art for their new house. She priced it at ₹899. The joy she felt receiving that payment was something I’ll never forget — not because of the money, but because someone valued her work.
Soon, she started getting custom orders. People began asking for couple name signs, baby name boards, anniversary gifts, even festive decorations. She didn’t need a website or a shop — just her phone, a notebook, and her raw materials. Every new order gave her confidence, and slowly her prices grew too. ₹899 became ₹1,299, then ₹1,999 for bigger pieces.
To manage everything better, she started taking 50% advance payments. She created templates for order tracking, and began offering customization options. Once she added WhatsApp status and joined a few local women’s business groups, her visibility grew fast. She also started making reels showing how she makes her art — and that attracted a whole new audience.
Within 4 months, she had crossed ₹50,000. And in just under 7 months, she hit ₹1,00,000 in total revenue — all from handmade crafts made at home. No investment except materials, time, and passion.
Her biggest takeaway? Don’t wait for perfection. Start with what you have. You never know which piece, which post, which order will change everything. And most importantly — if you truly enjoy what you create, the world will feel it too.
Today, Neha still works from home, takes limited orders, and even teaches workshops online. From hobby to income — she made it possible, one string at a time.
